Have you ever heard the saying, “Proud as a peacock”?

It isn’t surprising that the peacock is used in this metaphor. With its incredibly beautiful plumage, a peacock is a magnificent thing to see, and we can well imagine that the male peacock is very proud of how handsome it is.

If you have seen a peacock - generally in a zoo - you will notice that its tail feathers trail along behind it. Referred to as a train, they are very long - 4 1/2 to 5 feet - and their wingspan is about 4 ½ feet.

When a peacock has its marvelous tail fan completely extended it is nothing short of breathtaking.

Whatsmore, you can hear a sound coming from the feathers when the peacock shakes them. This train rattling is like a dance move the peacock performs to attract the peahen.

Additionally, the male peacock seems to have extra eyes - not in the back of its head - but on those magnificent, iridescent tail feathers.

Can the peacock see from these eyes? No, it cannot. These eyes, which are called eyespots, are not for seeing but for show, to attract the attention of females.

In nature, between the male and female of a species, it is the male that typically has the brighter colors.

There is a very important and practical reason for this: the male must attract the female of the species in order to mate and prolong the species.

So, while the male peacock is adorned with transcendent plumage, the female of the species, called a peahen, has colors that allow her to go unseen.

The peahen’s feathers are brown and gray so that she can be camouflaged. In this way she keeps herself and her young safe from predators.

The female peacock, in addition to being less striking, is considerably smaller than her male counterpart who can weigh up to 15 pounds compared to her maximum 9 pounds.

The peahen is also smaller in length. Including feathers, she can reach about 4 feet while the peacock with his feathers included can reach 7 feet in length.

Peacocking is when the male peacock fans out its glorious display of emerald green and sapphire blue feathers and puts on a display to compete against other male peacocks vying for the attention of a certain lady peacock.

The male peacock struts its stuff to attract the attention of the female. He must look confident and magnificent so the female will choose him.

Once the male wins his mate and impregnates her, they go their separate ways; he to mate again and she to hatch her young and care for them, living contentedly alongside other female peacocks.

The impressive, beautifully colored tail feathers of the male peacock have another role in addition to attracting a mate.

They act as a way to ward off predators. With its tail feathers spread out fully and its chest puffed out, the male peacock can look quite intimidating.

There is no denying that the peacock is one of nature’s most elegant and gorgeous fowl.
