Patterns surround us. Everywhere we look we can find patterns in our world, both in the natural world and the human made world.

Patterns occur in plant life like wildflowers and trees. They occur in the landscape around us.

I have always found the shots from a plane flying over an area of land to be really cool because you can see patterns in the landscape below.

Lakes and rivers, mountains and hilly terrain appear like an enormous picture of patterns.

One of my favorite landscape patterns is farmland. From a bird’s eye view, tidy squares of different colors are laid out before me.

It is at once both beautiful and calming. The various colors caused by the different crops that have been planted, provide a checkerboard of growth.

The tidiness of each plot of land gives a sense of organization and control which in turn makes me feel at ease and content.

From a young age, our brains begin to make sense of the world around us that we are awakening to by finding patterns in our environment.

Stories are read to us with patterns that help us to predict what will come next like “Five Little Monkeys” and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?”

We sort, organize, and classify objects around us, both living and inanimate.

Colors provide an early means of patterning, and toddlers will reach for their brightly-colored blocks, and put them into groups according to common shade.

There are many toys for young kids that require them to match a block of a particular shape, say a circle or a triangle, with a hole of the same shape.

In this way, children learn about different qualities of things, and this recognition of difference allows them to also see similarities.

Grouping according to common characteristics is an important step in the awareness of the patterns that exist in our world.

My nephew loves nature and the first thing he does when he comes to visit me is hunt for bugs and insects. He’s a real little biologist!

He sorts the creatures he finds into different categories, looking at how they are the same and how they are different.

This knowledge and ability to classify gives him a sense of control over his environment. This is important for human beings for the development of confidence and self-assuredness.

When we recognize patterns in our world around us whether those patterns occur in numbers, objects, or architecture, we have a sense of calm and control.

Patterns allow us to predict what is coming. Observing geometrical shapes and how they are put together can build our confidence and give us a sense of security.

In addition, patterns can simply make us happy! Beautiful lines in shapes and vibrant colors can make us feel good inside.

These patterns are visually appealing. Patterns can also come to us through the sense of hearing.

In music, patterns abound. If the composer wants to jar us out of a calm, relaxing state, they will mix up patterns and make them unpredictable, or they can provide a flow of notes and chords that we find soothing and peaceful.

In the “Peaceful Patterns Coloring Book” you have the power to create incredible patterns through the colors you apply to the illustrations on each of the fifty pages.
