I love the morning for a whole lot of reasons. As I write this article it is officially summer and the birds are cheerfully singing.

I look out the kitchen window and see pots of colorful flowers. My purple clematis has just begun blooming!

In the morning, everything is a clean slate. I can decide what I want to accomplish that day, and the whole day stretches out in front of me like a beautiful invitation.

When I wake up, I open my eyes to the sun pouring through my window. For morning people that’s a call to jump out of bed and embrace the day.

For those folks who are not so keen on the early hours, and prefer late nights, the sight of the early morning sun can prompt a groan and a pull of the blanket over the head.

Keeping a journal has been found to have many positive outcomes. From simple organization through a weekly bullet journal, to reflecting on priorities, journaling is a way to help us stay on top of things, and improve our well-being as well as the quality of our lives.

Journaling prompts come in all shapes and sizes. They are marvelous little inspirational phrases that get you thinking about something, and give you a little push in a certain direction.

Prompts do just that, they prompt us to think, and subsequently write our thoughts in our journal.

Quotes are delicious little nuggets that may inspire us to change our thinking about something or reflect on something. We can enjoy them simply for what they are.

Journaling prompts are similar to quotes in the way they are brief, and easy and fast to read, however, prompts are specific to the purpose of motivating us to reflect and write.

Morning journaling prompts are specific to that time of the day. What is unique to them is their focus on setting you up for success in the day ahead.

The beginning of the day is the perfect time to take a few moments to show gratitude. It is also a great time to review your goals for the day as well as those for the week.

On a more practical level, looking over what you have in your weekly bullet journal will ensure you are all set for everything that is happening that day, and preparing for anything coming up the rest of the week.

Taking a few minutes each and every morning to get into a positive mindset, and review your tasks and activities, can ensure a smooth and happy beginning to your day.

Checking In

One category of morning journaling prompts may be termed as check-ins. These prompts urge us to think about how we are feeling, what is on our mind right now, and how we slept.

These types of prompts can ease you into your day. You can think about them before you even get out of bed.

Check-in prompts can also ease anxiety, by encouraging you to ‘take stock’ of where you’re at, like the prompt to make a list of all the things that make you feel at peace.

Reflecting

Another type of morning journal prompt falls into a category we can call reflecting.

Prompts such as, if you could wish for anything today, what would it be, or what can you do to make today better than yesterday, get you started down the path of goal-setting.

Showing Gratitude

One of my personal favorite types of morning journaling prompts encourages me to show gratitude.

I love to start my day by thinking of several things I am grateful for. It might be as simple as a good night’s sleep or a warm, comfortable bed.

It could be that I give thanks for my family, and for good health.

Showing gratitude helps to not only put me in a positive mindset, but it also can remind me of things I want to do that day to show my gratitude toward someone.

A handy gratitude prompt gives us the task of writing down three things that happened yesterday that we are grateful for.

Reflecting on the best part of your day yesterday, or identifying someone you would like to see today gets us thinking about why we are grateful.

Goal Setting

If you’re a morning person, this is a great time of the day to think about goal setting.

This might take the form of reflecting on where you are with current goals, or setting a new goal!

Prompts like, what would it be and why if you could change one thing about yourself, and if money were no object, what would be on your bucket list, are great examples of how certain morning prompts can stimulate the creation of a goal.

Motivational

Yet another category of morning journal prompts is motivational. This to me is an absolute necessity.

We all want and need morning prompts that are going to get us excited about our day, and encourage us to get the most out of it!

In this category we have prompts like, list three things you love about yourself, and who do you want to connect with today.

They don’t have to be big things, just something that you can look forward to, and that gets you up and moving.
